Aluminum alloy forgeability is quite different

Commonly used deformed aluminum alloys have poor forgeability (compared with carbon steel and low alloy steel) at forging temperature, but can improve the forgeability of aluminum alloy after improving the processing conditions of aluminum alloy.

(1) Comparison of forgeability of various aluminum alloys. Among them, aluminum-zinc alloy and some aluminum-magnesium alloys have the worst forgeability; aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys have good forgeability; and aluminum-copper alloys and aluminum-silicon alloys have forgeability between the two. In addition, the unmarked pure aluminum and non-heat treatable aluminum alloys have much higher forgeability than other aluminum alloys, but these aluminum alloys should be less limited in forging production because they cannot be heat treated and strengthened.

(2) The forgeability of various aluminum alloys varies greatly. Due to the different types and contents of alloying elements in various alloys, the properties, quantity and distribution characteristics of the strengthening phase are also different, which seriously affects the plasticity and deformation resistance of the aluminum alloy, so the forgeability of various aluminum alloys is quite different.

(3) Compared with the forgeability of various steels, the forgeability of aluminum alloys has a large friction coefficient, strong adhesion, poor fluidity and large deformation resistance. Therefore, it is more difficult to forge than carbon steel and low alloy structural steel, but it is easier to forge than nickel-based or drill-based alloys and alloys. However, the forgeability of the aluminum alloy can be improved by improving the processing conditions of the aluminum alloy.
